T his body of work focuses on the discovery of Mestizo Reality; the struggle of the true self versus the assimilated self. The iconography in the work is very much in tune with the Mexicaness and spirituality of who I am. Both parents are mestizos born in Mexico, raised on the border, and are of Spanish and Mexican (indigenous) descent. Survival is the ultimate goal. Assimilation is the key to becoming a good productive U.S. citizen to the point that ancestry plays a very minor role in everyday life. Unfortunately, the true self is homogenized and assimilated for the benefit of survival.

Through the work I begin to discover the true self. Grounded in Christianity, the iconography is the vehicle utilized to assist in the discovery of a lost history, ancestry and a true reality all of which reference historical significance. The passages of iconography, color and form identify with the true self and the use of mixed media materials identify with the assimilated self. The obvious question(s) is/are: what is the status of the voyage? How do the iconography and elements used break the stereotypes of the preceived Latino artist, or do they?
