The ambiguity of human progress is on display "up close and personal" at an exhibition titled: JUNKING by Texas artist, Angella Emmett.

The Unistrut - nut with spring is one of those indeterminate objects, mass produced and vital to so many highly functioning machines. Without this product, Artist - Angella Emmett suggests, hypothetically, that our civilization would crumble. Although the nut with spring (nws) was fabricated under isolated processes, evidence of human ingenuity radiates from it's inanimate shape. The nws "part" was invented, drawings and diagrams of how it could be developed were issued, markets researched, and money was secured. Scientist, engineers, executives, and union workers all contributed to the production of this seemingly insignificant yet fundamental "cog".

What function does the nebulous nut with spring perform in global mass production and gluttonous consumption? Is it instrumental in making Hot Dogs? Manufacturing Lingerie? The public is invited to investigate...

"Angella Emmett's work has the effect of being light, peaceful and funny on the one hand, and darkly sinister and sad on the other."* Emmett has used industrial or machine manufactured materials to compose art works for several years. These materials are usually transformed into human like, biomorphic forms, loaded with paradoxical connotations. Her choice of artificially made materials most often suggest human like characteristics. The metaphors they create are oddly serious and at the same time humorous artifacts of our epoch.

Emmett lived in Houston for seven years before moving to Austin last summer. The earned a Masters in Fine Arts from the University of Houston in 1993 and has exhibited regionally and nationally over the last 10 years. Relevant showings include solo exhibitions at Ida Green Gallery-Austin College, Woppie's Deel - Netherlands and Introductions at New Gallery-Houston. Group exhibitions include The Assistance League's Texas Celebration, Houston Area Show, Texas Biennial, Opening Moves, Discovery - The Art League and Known and Underknown - The Allen Center.
