April at Purse Building Studios:
New Work
by Dran Alessi and Sean Flournoy

painting
My use of scientific and specifically botanical imagery is to draw on an association between our fascination and compulsion to categorize and name nature and the irony of this attempt at "taming ourselves". I think it is a fascinating and infinitely creative behavior we exhibit in our attempt to control and manage the powers of nature. Other images that are incorporated in this series are those of "civilized society", items of daily rituals and rules that when observed allow people a sense of security and place in nature, a house of rituals. I think an awareness of the extent to which we create our environments and establish our own rules would enable us to direct this creativity and construct more loving and spiritual houses.

I often use images from Botanical and human biology scientific texts by photocopy transfer and direct painting and drawing when manipulation of the image is not attainable by photocopy alone. I like the look of a tattoo that is sometimes associated with the photocopy transfer. Tattoos are another interesting way in which we designate who we are. I am also interested in the manipulation of these images to mimic game boards because I think the games we invent are a very playful behavior that shows our passion for rules and order.
