Marcus Adams' preoccupation with the self as a cultural construct, and the ways this is signified in our culture, are put into play in this exhibition at Purse Building Studios. The exhibition focus is on the relationships between the semiotics of form and the self as a construct of the Western mind. By problematizing how forms and formats signify, through the conflating of loaded signs and styles, the work forces the viewer to re-evaluate conventional constructs of meaning. Specifically, the works use formal similarities between traditional "high" art and contemporary common cultural objects. The paintings in the exhibition use expressionist drawing, the hierarchical scale of much pre-classical art and the poses of contemporary pornography, combined with the saccharine palette and soft and fluffy brush work of Rococo painting.

Here again, disparate signifiers of style and iconography are conflated to inform an object with a high degree of concinnity. The sculpture in this show is in the forms and materials of a common mass manufactured doll; with the addition of "sex doll" inspired genitalia. Thus, the signs of the child and adult are conflated, creating concinnity of forms but dissonance of meanings. This is one of two simultaneous solo exhibitions of Adams' work. The second is at Commerce Street Art Warehouse.
