Pixel acrylic on canvas 11"x15"x2" Ashley Hopfe |
While it is tempting to draw intellectual meaning into the work of Ashley Hopfe, one must resist doing so in order to discover the richness of the aesthetic quality therein. Her paintings do not intend to invite intellectual excercise, but rather an adventure of all senses, beginning with visuals. They can be tasted and smelled. Hopfe's mastery of space and color allows the viewer to almost experience tactile sensations. Drawing from everyday objects and images that the viewer may catch a glimpse of in his or her own memory, she reveals new combinations, forms and spaces, diminishing any possibility of monotony. |

Every group of paintings I make narrows my search for objects and places that describe my vision. In prior paintings, I chose popular icons to represent my ideas and thoughts. In these new paintings, I have synthesized my images and arranged them to mirror my surroundings and ease or lack of ease in the world. -Elizabeth Joblin |
