May at Purse Building Studios:
What If.....?
by Rosalind Lilly

"What is" becomes "What if...?" in Rosalind Lilly's recent body of mixed media sculpture featured in her upcoming exhibition. She begins by extracting an organic form or pattern, multiplying it and applying it to a simple geometric form. She says, "it becomes an object in itself, outside of its original context...real or unreal, yet in itself is curiously real...a formal organic reconstruction." The resulting images capture the poetic, the whimsical, and the irreverently absurd. Although each piece of her current work is self-contained, there is a poetic line drawn which connects each work into a cohesive body. The work is delicate yet bold, organic yet inventive in composition. There is a fine sense of the surreal and the minimal in the formal qualities of her work.

The simple elegance of the harmonious form first attracts the attention of the viewer. The Digitsphere, a hanging 16" spherical shape, appears to be floating in space and confounds the eye by looking like a delicate dandelion puff. Actually, it is a core on which the entire surfact is covered with identical outwardly-radiating pure white cast hydrocal fingers. The placement of the individual digits creates running pathways along which the eye travels to explore the spatial map of the piece. The Digitsphere pulsates with poetry of image.
Rosalind Lilly is a native Houstonian. She earned her B.A. at the University of Houston and studied at the M.F.A., Houston, Glassell School of Art. Her upcoming show will be her second solo exhibition in as many years. Her work has been shown in the Lawndale Big Show, 1996, The Art League of Houston, Commerce Street Art Warehouse, The Firehouse Gallery, and Summer Street Studios.
