New Work by Jan VanLiere
Games

In October, featured-artist Jan VanLiere presents "Games," a body of mixed-media sculptures and paintings that delve into the subject of games people play. Beautifully crafted, elegantly executed works revel an "in your face" view of experiences to which we've all been privy. "Games," is about human nature. The work is a surreal retort. VanLiere uses forms that allude to the human condition, the tools we use, the items that connote a state of being. For example, the sculpture "Just When I Got Comfy" is an inviting plush velvet arm-chair, luring one to sit and relax, only to find the back of it brutally punctured by blades of knives. This piece clearly portrays a wrenching betrayal. | ||||||

Another notable sculpture is a sitting stool layered with flapper-type fringe. Cast rubber noses, tinged with a brown glistening color cover the seat. One can only imagine the title of this piece, "Brown-nosing," perhaps? The work of Jan VanLiere is worth venturing out to the warehouse district's art space in the Purse Building, 1701 Commerce St. The exhibit runs throughout the month of October.
