Description
The provocative and eloquent film Monolog is a witty and direct challenge to the notion of the artist’s identity and institutional regulations imposed upon the viewing of art and the behaviour of a supposedly captive audience. Prouvost parodies her own role as a director and the role of the audience as she directs attention to the screening space itself. The film addresses the fallibility of language as a means of communication splicing together seemingly random snippets of footage, text and voiceover in a surreal stream of personal associations. Muriel Tinel-Temple @ LUX In Monolog, Laure Prouvost plays with the limits and characteristics of the medium, especially the framing, the importance of the setting, and the power of editing over the representation of time. Her face is always out of frame, making her body even more visible and present by using the ‘wrong’ size shot and the ‘wrong’ distance. Again, by playing with her presence and her voice through her monologue, she experiments with basic elements of filmmaking.
