While creating Simmer, my mind was focused on the contradictions that define our moment. The Marxist notion of “real abstraction,” when considered in conjunction with neoliberalism’s opportunistic inversion of priorities, suggests how language has been “put to work” in society. The terminus of 5th Avenue in New York City functions as a portal into this inversion game. Surrounded by the new JPMorganChase headquarters on one side and MetLife on the other, there is an abstraction that signals social discontent; a material reality that will eventually be considered. Simmer is a CG reinterpretation of a late-1990s sculpture I created, called The Art of Acquisition.
